Custom Cabinets vs Box Cabinets: Construction Material

It’s What’s On The Inside That Counts

Not all cabinets are created equal, and over this next series of posts I will lay out the differences between custom cabinets vs. box cabinets. In this post, the focus will be the material used for constructing the cabinets.

Plywood vs. Particleboard
Plywood offers more strength and durability than particle board due to the way it’s manufactured. If you are planning on a solid surface countertop like granite or quartz you want a cabinet that can support it. Particle board is very porous and does not hold up well with water if the unthinkable happens with a leak. With 3/4 prefinished plywood, you have a longer window to catch the leak before significant water damage takes place. When choosing your cabinets make sure to ask what the boxes will be made of so you can know you are getting the most value for your money. Though rarely seen, where the plywood meets the hardwood has a quality finished look. The photo above is an upper cabinet that is sitting on its top, so you see the bottom of the cabinet here.

In our eyes, plywood boxes equal quality boxes and quality is our goal. Our objective with these posts is to inform, and if you have any questions, please ask them in the comment section below.
